Journaling Backtesting Trades While Backtesting

Journal backtesting trades in TradeZella's Journal Tab — take notes, tag trades, apply strategies, organize sessions, and auto-sync to your Notebook.

Access the Journal Tab

Find the Journal Tab on the right-hand side of your backtesting session. Click the Journal icon from the right sidebar, or press Shift + 3 on your keyboard as a shortcut to open it at any time during your session.

  • Session Notes – Capture key observations, takeaways, and screenshots from your backtesting session.

    • Templates button is to apply a pre-built note template and get started faster. You can also type directly in the text field or press / for formatting commands.

Note: Session notes automatically sync to your Notebook > Backtesting Session Notes folder

  • Trade Notes – View all executed trades and click on any trade to annotate it. From here you can:

    • Add trade-specific notes

    • Tag trades for quick categorization

    • Attach screenshots for visual reference

    • Add trades to Strategies for deeper analysis

Strategies - Organize & Analyze Your Trades

  • Add Trades to Strategies — Assign trades to one or multiple Strategies for structured journaling

  • Apply Strategy Rules — Check off relevant rules to categorize and refine your strategy

  • Manage Strategies — Attach, detach, and reassign Strategies, or click + Create new playbook to build one on the spot


Tags - Categorize & Track Patterns

  • Identify setups, mistakes, and trading patterns — tags are organized by categories (e.g. Mistakes, Entry, Custom Tags) with a dropdown to select from. Can't find the right tag? Type it in and click + Create to add it on the spot.

  • Tags make it easier to filter and analyze past trades. Click Add new category to create a new tag group.

  • Click Manage tags at the bottom of the Tags tab to edit your full tag library from the Tags Management Page.


Notebook & Auto-Syncing - Keep Your Notes Organized

  • Enter detailed trade insights in the Trade Notes section or the Session Notes section

  • Click Templates to apply a pre-built note template, or press / for formatting commands

  • Notes automatically sync to:

    • Notebook > Trade Notes Folder

    • Notebook > Backtesting Session Notes Folder

💡 Note: Starting from a Scenario doesn't change how your trades are journaled. Everything still flows through the Journal Tab as usual.
